Life Lessons with Duff Goldman at 2 a.m.

I’m still awake at nearly two in the morning so, of course, I’m watching Food Network. “Ace of Cakes” is on, chronicling (as much as Food Network is capable of “chronicling” anywho) the staff’s trip to London and here are some things I’ve learned while watching this episode.

  • When bringing an American airbrush compressor out of the country, be sure to pack the appropriate adapter or you will probably cause a fire
  • Shakespeare and his friends stole the original Globe theatre from one of his competitors; they literally took the theatre apart (peg by peg and beam by beam) and took it across the River Thames
  • The current Globe theatre is a recreation; not the original. (This was a disappointment.) But it is built the way it would have been in Elizabethan times (aka with British oak trees and pegs; no nails or glue anywhere.)
  • The feeling of love causes the spleen to engorge. (Disclaimer: This may or may not be true. Some crazy English chef made this statement before comparing being a chef to being a Jedi knight.)

On a personal note: this episode brought home how much I miss London. It was the first—and only—place besides New York City I’ve ever really felt a sense of homecoming and I was only there for four and a half months.
